TOKAS International Creator Residency Program 2027

Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) is the contemporary-art programming arm of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT), based in Koto-ku, Tokyo. Its residency programs run alongside the museum's exhibition and curatorial activity, and the International Creator Residency Program is its flagship invitation to non-Japanese practitioners working in visual art (including photography), film, design, and architecture.

The 2027 cycle offers six three-month residencies across three periods: May–July 2027, September–November 2027, and January–March 2028. Each resident is housed in a single-room studio apartment at TOKAS Residency, with access to shared studio and workspace. The program covers round-trip economy airfare, a daily per diem of 4,200 JPY (approximately €25), and a creative work fee of 300,000 JPY (approximately €1,800) intended to support research and production during the stay.

Eligibility is open to international artists with at least five years of professional practice. Applicants cannot be students at the time of the residency. Previous TOKAS participants are allowed to reapply, but only for a program they have not yet completed. Applications close June 16, 2026 at 18:00 Japan Standard Time. Inquiries through the dedicated contact form are accepted until June 7, 2026.

Submission is via an online form alongside an uploaded PDF Application Form, two letters of recommendation from referees versed in art and culture, and a portfolio. Selection is by the TOKAS jury, with results communicated by email; the residency itself begins from May 2027 for the first cohort.
