Penland Winter Residency 2027

A self-directed project residency during Penland's quiet winter season, offering artists two- or four-week sessions of studio time and equipment access with no classes, assignments or critiques. Residents work independently in one of Penland's teaching studios — photography is among the available studios, alongside books, clay, drawing and painting, glass, iron, letterpress, metals, papermaking, printmaking, textiles and wood — with studio assistants on hand for orientation and equipment help. Sessions run January 3–15 and January 17–29, 2027; the residency fee is $500 for two weeks (more for flameworking and hot shop) plus housing, and limited fellowships cover the residency fee and partial housing, with preference given to first-time applicants and artists from underrepresented backgrounds. Open to artists at any career stage who are comfortable working independently.
