photoED Magazine — Real VS Imagined

photoED is a Canadian print photography magazine that publishes themed issues, with each issue's content drawn from open call submissions. "Real VS Imagined" is the third edition in the magazine's 2026 season of contrasts (after "Order VS Chaos" and "Home VS Away"), inviting fine art photography projects that engage with documentary reality, constructed or imagined photo-based stories, or the tension between the two.

The brief favours well-considered projects crafted with intention and original artistic work over stock photography. Entries are blind reviewed by the magazine's volunteer curatorial editorial board, which assesses how each project offers a unique interpretation of the theme.

The selection structure has two tiers: 10 projects are featured in the printed edition (and its digital replica), and 25 additional projects appear in the free Digital Extra companion. Selected contributors receive printed copies of the magazine with worldwide shipping included, plus exposure across photoED's email and social channels.

Submissions go through Zealous and are limited to 1 to 8 image files (JPG, at least 2000px on the long edge). The general submission fee is $20 CAD, with entry free for current print subscribers and Patreon patrons; economically challenged artists may request a waiver from the editor. Entries are welcome worldwide except from residents of Russia, Belarus, and sanctioned countries. The deadline is September 18, 2026, with publication expected in November 2026.
