Cavendish Arts Science Fellowship 2026–27
The Cavendish Arts Science Fellowship is an annual art-science residency in Cambridge, run jointly by Girton College and the Cavendish Laboratory — the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge. The fellowship is structured to allow artists to engage with physicists and other researchers at one of the world's most significant physics institutions, where Watson and Crick worked, where the electron was discovered, and where 30+ Nobel Prizes have been awarded.
The 2026–27 fellowship runs October 2026 through October 2027. The Cambridge residency itself is flexible — minimum 6 months and up to 12 months total, which can be split across multiple visits. The remainder of the year-long appointment can be conducted remotely. The fellowship is not expected to be a full-time engagement.
Financial support: £10,000 stipend (covering living costs), £10,000 production budget for new work, up to £3,000 travel allowance, plus rent-free accommodation and meals at Girton College during the residency. The fellow has access to a studio/creative workspace at Girton plus flexible working spaces at the Cavendish Laboratory.
Past fellows include Logan Dandridge, Ain Bailey, Robert Ssempijja, and Akeelah Bertram (current: Thulani Rachia).
Eligibility is open internationally to artists working in any medium. Applicants must be 18 or over and out of full-time education by October 2026. No prior science experience required. The fellowship explicitly welcomes joint applications. There is no application fee. Applications go through JotForm; the 2026 deadline is May 16 at 11:00 AM British Summer Time. Zoom interviews scheduled for July 22, 2026.
