Barbara Spohr Memorial Award for Photography 2027

The Barbara Spohr Memorial Award is administered by the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Banff, Alberta, established by the friends and family of the late artist Barbara Spohr. The award supports Canadian contemporary photography through a fully funded, self-directed month-long residency at Banff's Leighton Artists Studios complex.

The 2027 residency runs January 18 through February 12 (with arrival January 17 and departure February 13). The selected photographer works in the Crich Studio, which includes private black-and-white analogue darkroom facilities; digital print production and on-site technical photography support are also available. Studio access is 24/7, with full access to the Banff Centre's broader campus facilities including fitness center and library.

Funding covers tuition, single accommodation, and meal plan — a 100% scholarship valued at approximately $7,600.95 CAD. The award also includes a $1,000 CAD materials allowance (issued as a cheque) and a travel bursary with regional maximums.

Eligibility is restricted: Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Jay Treaty eligible; aged 18 or over; mid-career, defined as a minimum of 10 exhibitions in a professional context and 8 to 15 years of professional photography experience. Strong darkroom proficiency is required. Previous recipients of this specific residency are not eligible to apply again. The application fee is $35 CAD (non-refundable). Applications go through SlideRoom; the deadline is June 17, 2026 at 11:59 PM MST.
