James Balog Earth Vision Awards

Juried prizes supporting photographers responding to today's complex environmental issues, organised and produced by the Denver Art Museum with funds endowed by James Balog and other donors, and awarded every two years. The awards recognise sustained commitment and significant accomplishment in photography that bears witness to the relationship between humans and the environment and challenges people to build healthier, more sustainable relationships with nature. A three-member jury of expert photo professionals reviews all entries and may contact entrants for clarification before final decisions; fabricated photographs, cloning, excessive colour manipulation and AI-generated content are not considered. First prize is $40,000 ($30,000 on award, $10,000 twelve to eighteen months later) and the finalist receives $25,000 ($19,000 on award, $6,000 later). Applicants submit a portfolio of 10 to 20 photographs — falling outside that range is grounds for disqualification — with an artist statement describing firsthand experience and the environmental significance of the work, an explanation of the intended project and its anticipated impact, and a resume or exhibition history. Open to photographers worldwide aged 21 or over; previous winners and finalists are not eligible. The call opens September 1, 2026, winners are announced in January 2027, and awards are presented at the Denver Art Museum in March 2027.
