Common Ground in the Heartland: Reflecting on America at 250

Free-to-enter juried exhibition at the Visual Arts Center of the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. The centre invites artists from across the Midwest to reflect on the people, places and experiences that shape a shared story — from small towns and family farms to growing cities and tribal communities — in a region long a crossroads of cultures, traditions, industries and ideas. The exhibition explores the values, traditions and relationships that bring people together while recognising the diverse experiences that define communities, with suggested themes including community and belonging, cultural heritage, land and stewardship. All mediums are welcome, photography included, and up to five images may be submitted. Artists from the Midwest or with a connection to the region are encouraged to apply, though entry is not formally restricted, and artists at every career stage are invited. Work must not exceed 60 inches or 50 lbs and arrives ready to install; the centre insures it and splits sales 70/30 in the artist's favour. Notifications 5 August, with work due 20 August — the show then runs an unusually long 28 August 2026 – 21 February 2027.
