Athenaeum Gallery Show Proposals

The Athenaeum Gallery, a Greek Revival landmark in Old Town Alexandria run by the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association, sets aside part of its programme for shows proposed by artists and curators rather than chosen by the gallery director. Artists living or working in Virginia, Maryland or the District of Columbia may propose a solo show; groups of artists from the region may propose a group show; and a curator based anywhere may propose a show of work by artists from the area. Proposals are reviewed by gallery director Twig Murray on what the artist is trying to communicate, what makes the work distinctive, technical quality, and how recently the artist has shown locally. All visual media are welcome, photography included, but every work must be wall-mounted, less than nine inches deep and ready to hang on picture hooks; nothing floor-standing and nothing requiring electricity. The gallery takes 40% commission on sales.
