Apparently in America — Artist Award 2026

Apparently, in America is a photography award founded by curator Francesca Hummler that explores the myth and meaning of American-ness through a single rhetorical prompt. Photographers complete the phrase "Apparently, in America…" through both their work and project description — submissions must include the literal phrase as part of their statement.

One artist receives the $500 main prize plus featured placement on the Apparently in America platform; up to three honorable mentions are also selected. Selection criteria are explicit: conceptual strength, visual coherence, and how thoughtfully the work engages with the theme of American identity in cultural, political, and personal dimensions.

Submissions require 10 to 20 images per applicant, all original work not previously featured by the initiative. The entry fee is $10, with waivers available by email request for those experiencing financial hardship. Open internationally to photographers.

The 2026 jury comprises Cali M. Banks (Light Work / Syracuse University), Leah DeVun (Rutgers University), William Camargo (Pasadena City College), and Francesca Hummler (founder, also affiliated with Der Greif). The deadline is July 4, 2026 at 9:59 PM; results announced September 1.
