13th Annual LA Billboard Exhibition: No Walls
For thirteen years The Billboard Creative has turned billboards across Los Angeles into a citywide open-air gallery, buying the same advertising space that usually sells products and giving it to artists instead. Selected artists each receive their own billboard in Los Angeles for four weeks; TBC covers production, installation and the billboard space itself, and photographs each installed board for its exhibition archive. Boards are placed on high-traffic routes near galleries, museums and cultural centres as well as on ordinary commuter roads, so the work is seen by people who would not otherwise walk into a gallery — past exhibitions have been covered by NPR, Hyperallergic, the Los Angeles Times and KCRW. Photography is explicitly welcome alongside painting, sculpture, collage, mixed media and digital work: if the piece can be supplied as a digital file it can go on a billboard. Video and audio works are not accepted for this edition. Entries cost $28 for the first image and $10 for each additional image up to twenty.
