The Book Project - Street Photography

Black Box Gallery's Book Project is a recurring publishing program — distinct from the gallery's themed exhibition calls — where each accepted cycle is published as a 12×12 inch hardbound square book through Blurb Books. The 2026 Street Photography call is the sixth in the Book Project series.

The format is concentrated: 10 photographers are selected, each receiving 5 photographs in the published book. The book is offered for sale through Blurb's print-on-demand network, with photographers retaining all copyright (files are used solely for book printing).

The brief is straightforward: street photography featuring chance encounters and random moments within public places. Selection prioritizes work that operates in the documentary tradition of street photography — observed rather than staged.

The juror is Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery, who holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and serves as juror across all Black Box programs.

Entry fee is $40 for a submission of 5 to 10 images. Eligibility is open worldwide to amateur and professional photographers. Application is by email after PayPal fee payment, with image titles and JPEG attachments at 1200 pixels on the longest side, 72 PPI, max 5 MB each. The 2026 deadline is May 25; notification within 7 to 10 days.
