Martin House Creative Residency 2026
The Martin House Creative Residency is hosted at the Darwin D. Martin House (125 Jewett Parkway, Buffalo, NY 14214), Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie-style masterpiece designed for businessman Darwin D. Martin and built between 1903 and 1905. The complex is one of Wright's most ambitious residential designs and a National Historic Landmark.
The residency is project-based: applicants must propose work directly inspired by the architecture, design, landscape, or social history of the Martin House. The program is unusually broad in disciplinary scope — visual artists, writers, researchers, and creative makers from any field can apply, with photography explicitly eligible.
Residency length is 2 to 4 weeks onsite, either consecutively or split across multiple visits within the June through October 2026 term. Each resident receives a $5,000 stipend (paid in two installments — 50% on arrival, 50% on completion) plus up to $1,000 in travel expenses for non-local participants. Housing is provided in the Gardener's Cottage on the Martin House campus — a private bedroom and bathroom with utilities and high-speed wi-fi included.
Residents are required to deliver a free public program, performance, exhibition, or other creative presentation during or after the residency, sharing work with the Buffalo community.
Eligibility requires applicants to have a U.S. social security number (including permanent residents, OPT holders, and Indigenous peoples eligible under the Jay Treaty). Individual applicants only — collectives are not eligible. The program is free to apply. The 2026 application window runs March 30 through May 13, 2026.
