Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award 2026

The Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award is administered by FotoDocument, the UK-based documentary photography organization, and supported by Nikon. The award is named after Marilyn Stafford, the pioneering documentary photographer whose career spanned mid-twentieth-century photojournalism through her later years as a portrait and travel photographer. The 2026 cycle is the award's landmark 10th edition.

The grant is £4,000, awarded to a single recipient. Beyond the cash, the winner's project is exhibited at POST, Brighton and Hove's centre for photography (September 17–20, 2026), and featured on both FotoDocument's website and Lenscratch. Honourable Mentions and shortlisted applicants receive at least one image profiled on FotoDocument's website with social media promotion through FotoDocument and Nikon.

The brief is specific: documentary photo essays addressing social, environmental, economic, or cultural issues, with selection criteria favoring work that showcases positive solutions and demonstrates practical engagement with the subject — not just witness documentation but constructive framing.

Eligibility is restricted to female photographers (and those identifying as female) aged 18 or over, at any career stage, of any nationality. Applicants must have completed at least one prior documentary photo essay and must have already started the project they're applying with — the grant funds completion or extension rather than ideation.

The 2026 jury comprises Andrea Bruce (NOOR Photo Agency, Nikon Ambassador), Donna De Cesare (Associate Professor, University of Texas at Austin), Nina Emett (Director of FotoDocument), Neo Ntsoma (Neo Ntsoma Productions), and Isabella Franceschini (the 2024 winner). Applications are free. The 2026 application window opens March 8; following an extension, applications now close June 1 at 5pm GMT, with results announced late June.
