Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant 2026

The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant honors Ian Parry, a British photojournalist who died at age 24 in 1989 while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution. The grant was established in his memory and has run for over three decades, with Sir Don McCullin as patron. Past recipients include Simon Roberts (1998), Nanna Heitmann, Maisie Crow, and Marcelo Pérez del Carpio — several of whom went on to establish significant photojournalism careers.

Eligibility is restricted to photographers aged 24 or under, or to photographers of any age currently enrolled full-time in a photographic course. There is no application fee.

The winner receives £10,000 in cash plus a year-long mentorship with photojournalist Giles Duley, Canon equipment loans for one year, publication in The Guardian, inclusion in the Hamburg Portfolio Review, and potential safety equipment and hostile-environment training via the Gentex Corp award. The combination is built to support a recipient through the year following the grant rather than just commemorate the win.

Selection draws on a 40+ member advisory committee of photography professionals, editors, and curators. Current institutional partners include Canon, The Guardian, and the Legacy of War Foundation. The 2026 cycle is administered through Picter (site.picter.com/ian-parry-photojournalism-grant-2026); the deadline is August 31, 2026, and results are announced October 30, 2026.
